Dental loupes are an integral part of dental practitioners' toolbox. I bought loupes when I was preparing for the ACS exam. When I started prepping for the exam, I would do a prep and take it to my instructor for grading and he would say that it's still rough, there are scratches on the prep, composite still needs polishing, PFM, FMC prepares still have minor ledges on margin etc and I couldn't see them with the naked eye. He suggested that I should buy good quality dental loupes or it would be almost impossible to pass the exam.

I started researching online on what to look for in loupes. At that time rumour had it that ACS examiners used 6X loupes to grade our preps. Most students at the centre I practiced at had 3X loupes. I read various reviews, articles etc about the most popular loupes available at that time. Reviewers on dental economics, The SDN network etc talked highly of Q optics.

I contacted a local rep (The Surgical Room) and he came over for a demo. I took instantly to the hot pink telescopic loupes and I chose 4X.

I love how I can see the whole arch with my telescopic loupes and not just a single tooth. The image is crisp, the loupes are very lightweight and fashionable. I use them with Lumadent prolux LED. They are the best in class combo! I love that the LED lasts 40 hours on a single charge! Not only is that excellent for the exam, but it's also awesome when you start practicing. I work the whole week, full time, without having to worry about the battery dying during a procedure.

Loupes and LED are a must for the ACS exam. I know it looks likes an extra cost at that time but trust me, you will notice a difference immediately in your preparation once you start using louopes. Not only do they keep your posture accurate, they are becoming a part of the standard of practice.
